Guide Dog Mobility Instructor
Join a great team to fulfill a mission of training specially selected and bred pups to become life-changing guides for Texans who are blind. Guide Dogs of Texas is a growing non-profit organization located in San Antonio, TX that offers the freedom and independence of Guide Dog mobility. The Guide Dog Mobility Instructor (GDMI) will assess guide dogs in the puppy program, train their string of guide dogs, match those guide dogs with applicants, and train the guide dogs and clients together. Team training may occur in a variety of settings. The GDMI will also conduct in-home mobility assessments with Guide Dog applicants. GDMIs support and shape client teams from placement to retirement of the dog. Additionally, the GDMI, along with every other staff member at GDTX, plays a vital and active role in developing volunteers, donors, and the community at large.
The qualified candidate for this exciting opportunity will demonstrate empathy for visually impaired individuals, excellent knowledge and skills, and a passion for enriching their lives through the help of a guide dog. Having good communication skills to work with a variety of volunteers, staff, and clients is helpful. Must have current drivers license and be willing to travel around the state of Texas assisting visually impaired individuals. Relocation to satellite centers in Texas may be required in the future. Orientation and Mobility Certification, Deaf-Blind training experience, and Spanish language skills desirable.
