Guide Dogs NSW/ACT is the largest provider of Guide Dogs and mobility training for people with sight loss in Australia. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Guide Dog Trainer to join our team at the Guide Dog Centre in Glossodia on a two year fixed term contract. Reporting to the Guide Dog Services Manager, the purpose of the role is to train high quality dogs to meet the outcome standards set by Guide Dogs NSW/ACT and to ensure a consistent supply of high quality Guide Dogs is produced annually, to meet demand. The successful candidate will complete internal specialised training.

Key responsibilities include:

  •  Assess dogs for temperamental and physical suitability to enter Guide Dog training;
  •  Establish appropriate kennel behaviours;
  •  Train dogs to perform required obedience exercises;
  •  Test dog’s response to environmental stimuli;
  •  Review each dog’s individual characteristics to determine appropriate training methodology;
  •  Design and provide a positive and efficient training plan for each individual dog;
  •  Review each dog’s progress at pre-determined times to ensure it is reaching an appropriate level of skill;
  •  Liaise and work with internal teams as required for the specific requirements for individual dogs; and
  •  Assist with veterinary care of dogs through the management and implementation of treatment plans.

 

To be considered for this opportunity you must demonstrate:

  • Prior experience in a dog training facility will be highly regarded coupled with good working knowledge of canine behaviour;
  • Confidence in dog handling, effective leadership and control of dogs, and good voice control;
  • Experience working in a kennels environment;
  • Ability to relate with dogs of all ages and levels of training;
  • Problem analysis skills and ability to recognise changes in dog behaviour;
  • Excellent time management & organisational skills;
  • An aptitude as a team player; with excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Enthusiasm, energy and drive to undertake repetitive work that is both physically and mentally challenging; and
  • A current NSW driver’s licence with a good driving record.

This is a highly physical role with outdoor duties, walking and extensive contact with dogs. Applicants must be physically fit to undertake the inherent requirements of the role.
