Manager of Training - Sylmar, California

Job Purpose

To assure the facility’s training program and puppy development continues to meet the needs of the organization and the students with successful guide dogs.


Duties and Responsibilities

Ensure that the training and canine development departments are adequately staffed and supervised for dog, client, and staff training and organized to assist with home interviews, student instruction, graduate follow-up, and other ancillary functions.

Develop and implement staff education and training related to raisers, clients, dogs, and instructors encompassing modern technology, training procedures and employee development to foster a high level of excellence.

As an active member of the Admissions Student Selection Committee, make recommendations regarding student acceptance.

Ensure sufficient dogs are available for training and class and that quality standards are consistently followed in the final blindfold testing for all class-ready guides.

Ensure and supervise the care and welfare of all dogs under the Training and Canine Development departments.

During class, oversee decisions concerning the final status of all individual student teams.

Assist in the preparation of all assigned departments, budgets and monitor costs throughout year.

Undertake performance reviews, recruiting, and discipline as necessary.

Adheres to our organization's safety policies and procedures and encourages others to do the same. Promptly reports incidents and accidents according to campus procedures.

Undertake other duties as assigned.



High school graduate or GED

Qualified guide dog instructor.

Experience working with canine service organizations

Experience in non-profit environment a plus


Working Conditions

Must be comfortable working outdoors in all types of weather

Must be able to walk long routes

Some weekend, evenings and overnight work required


Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 lbs. and 70 lbs. with assistance
